Kitchen Splashback Trends: Materials and Styles for Auckland Homes

Modern Auckland kitchen with a full-height grey marble-look stone splashback, oak cabinetry and city views

Right, let's talk splashbacks. It's funny, isn't it? People will agonise for weeks over cabinet colours and benchtop stone, then treat the splashback like an afterthought. Honestly, that's a mistake. Your splashback is basically the jewellery of your kitchen: it's the bit that catches the light, ties everything together, and cops all the daily grease and grime while looking good doing it.

I've fitted out kitchens all over Auckland, from Herne Bay villas to Papakura new builds, and I can tell you the splashback conversation has changed a lot in the last few years. Kiwis are getting braver with their choices. Good on them.

Glass Is Still King, But It's Getting Bolder

Splashed-out glass panels remain the most requested option, and it's easy to see why. They're seamless, easy to wipe down, and they reflect light beautifully in those north-facing kitchens you find around Remuera and Mt Eden. But here's the shift: plain white glass is losing ground to deeper, richer colours. We're talking forest greens, charcoal, even the odd burnt terracotta if a client's feeling adventurous.

Pair that with brushed brass tapware and you've got a kitchen that feels like it belongs in a design magazine, not a project home. Sweet as, if you ask me.

Stone and Engineered Stone Slabs

Full-height stone splashbacks that match the benchtop are having a real moment. There's something satisfying about that continuous slab running from bench to rangehood, no grout lines to worry about, no joints collecting muck. It's a premium look, and it comes with a premium price tag too, but for a Showpiece-tier kitchen it makes total sense.

Engineered stone (think porcelain or quartz composites) gives you that marble-look luxury without the maintenance headaches of natural stone. Real marble is gorgeous, sure, but it stains if you look at it wrong. Engineered options are far more forgiving for a busy family kitchen in Devonport or Grey Lynn.

Tiles Are Having a Renaissance

Now here's where it gets interesting: tiles never really left, but they're back with more personality. Subway tiles feel a bit dated now, if we're honest, and Auckland homeowners are moving toward zellige tiles: those handmade Moroccan-style ones with the slightly wonky, irregular surface. They catch light differently across each tile, giving you texture and depth that a flat glass panel just can't match.

Herringbone patterns are popular too, especially in period villas around Ponsonby where a bit of pattern play suits the character of the home. It's a nod to heritage without going full retro.

What About Practicality?

Look, trends are fun, but let's not lose the plot here. A splashback needs to earn its keep. If you're a keen cook (and let's face it, plenty of us fancy ourselves the next MasterChef contestant), you want something that handles heat, splatter, and the occasional stray bit of stir-fry oil without drama.

Glass and stone win on cleaning ease. Tiles need decent grout sealing, otherwise you'll be scrubbing at stained grout lines within a year, and nobody wants that. If low maintenance is your priority, factor that into your material choice before you fall in love with a Pinterest photo.

Bringing It Together

A good kitchen designer will help you match your splashback to your cabinetry, benchtop, and hardware so nothing fights for attention. That's honestly where we spend a lot of time with clients during the design phase: getting the balance right so the kitchen feels considered, not chaotic.

We use Blum hardware across our cabinetry, and it's the same philosophy with splashbacks: quality materials, properly installed, built to last rather than just look good on install day. Whether you're leaning glass, stone, or tile, the goal is a kitchen you'll still love in ten years, not just ten Instagram likes.
